I do not use FW anymore, since nearly 10 years, but it is still a good tool. I'd rather use Photoshop, which is more "standard" and installed on many computers. This way, as a web developer, I can easily work with art directors, etc.
I've used Fireworks for more than 10 years as my graphics application of choice. I like it better than Photoshop because personally I don't like how photoshop forces everything into it's own layer. The price is a bit steep though.

Fireworks is a must have for any Web / UI Designer! Photoshop is by far the best when it comes to applying effects and managing multiple layered documents but if you're project consists of designing web elements then Fireworks is a better tool for the job. With Fireworks CS5 you can design pixel-perfect elements with accuracy and even apply the common effects such as shadows, gradients and highlights.

I love the new fireworks , cs5, but it only fixes bugs and stability issues , I wanted to see something new, new vector tools etc to play with.
