THE best free & cross-platform sync, backup, and storage software i've ever had the pleasure to use. I use this every freakin' day. Once you sign up you can refer other folks for extra space. for example, if i referred you, both of us would get an extra 250mb on top of the free 2gb. so here it goes. my shameful referral: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTIyNTg4NDU5
open source twitter alternative. has all the basic features of twitter and more. can be installed on your own server. doesn't have the community or all the tools (as obnoxious and some completely useless as they are) but if people start switchin' the 3rd party apps will soon follow. i use my messaging client digsby (you can use google talk, AIM) to post and follow. you can also use pidgin. i love it.
great little program. i use it to keep track of all the work i do for clients and whatnot. also helps if you're working at home and you want to log in your hours for the day. there's a little too much clicking involved for my taste but it has plenty of features and it's all free!
A really cool program that can display almost anything on your desktop. weather, email, RSS, CPU and memory usage, text files, and PLENTY of other things. It acts like a layer over your wallpaper. There is a slight learning curve but it can be overcome easily by experimentation and editing the default configurations.
first thing i install on any ubuntu machine.
